김사량의 소설에 나타난 민족주의적 지향 -『광명』 을 중심으로

광명光冥은 김사량의 일본어 소설은 물론이고 일제 말기 식민지조선의 문학 지형에서 아주 중요한 비중이나 중요성을 차지하고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이 작품은 그 동안 부당한 서자 취급을 받아왔다. 이 글은 그러한 문제의식에서 출발한다. 그러한 문제의식에서 출발한이 글은 이 작품이 빛 속으로 이후 김사량이 자신의 일관된 소설적화두로 실천고자 했던 민족주의적 지향의 연장선에 있는 작품임을 밝혀보고자 했다. 이러한 문제의식과 목적을 효과적으로 수행하기 위해이 글은 호미 바바의 혼종성과 양가성 이론을 차용하고 동원하였다. 이 작품의 서사를 추동하는 동력은 민족주의적 지향을 표상하는 ‘광’과 식민주의의 욕망을 표상하는 ‘명’이 길항하고 충돌하는 과정에서 경험하는 나의 분열과 갈등이다. 이러한 서사를 통해 김사량은 내선일체정책의 허구성과 기만성을 증언하고 심문하고자 하는 문제의식을 반영하고 있다. 물론 이 작품은 빛 속으로 를 통해 다짐한 민족주의적 지향의 실천을 향해 올곧게 나아가지 못한 채 식민주의의 욕망의 유혹에동요하는 모습을 보이는 것은 사실이다. 그것은 한계로 지적할 수 있다. 하지만 그 한계는 김사량 개인의 한계라기보다는 이 작품을 발표하던 당시 한 개인의 의지로는 감당하기 버거웠던 시대적 압력이나 폭력에 의한 불가항력적인 것으로 보는 게 온당하다. 엄혹한 시대적인 압력의 부하를 안간힘으로 견디면서 자신의 소설적 화두로 설정한 민족주의적 지향의 실천을 계속 이어나가고자 한 고투의 과정에서 산출된 텍스트가 바로 이 작품이기 때문이다. 그러한 해석의 연장선에서 이 글은이 작품의 제목인 ‘광명’ 또한 이 작품의 문제의식을 압축하고 있다고보았다. 민족주의적 지향을 표상하는 광과 식민주의적 욕망을 표상하는명을 병치하는 제목의 설정을 통해서 김사량은 상호 대립하고 충돌하는 그 두 욕망과 지향 사이에서 겪을 수밖에 없었던 실존의 고뇌를 압축적으로 표상하고 있기 때문이다.
Abstract
Light and Dark plays an important role not only in Kim, Sa-liang’s Japanese novels but also in the layout of literature of colonial Choson in the end of Japanese colonization era. Nevertheless, the work Light and Dark has been unjustly regarded as a child of a concubine. This paper starts from awareness of the issue. Starting from the awareness, this paper aims to reveal that the work is an extension of nationalistic intention which Kim, Sa-liang consistently suggested as a topic in his novels since his work In to the Light . In order to conduct the awareness and achieve the aim effectively, this paper borrows and brings Homi K. Bhabha’s theory of hybridity and ambivalence. The motive force giving an impetus to the work is his conflict and split which are experienced in the process that ‘Light’ representing nationalistic intention contends and collides with ‘Dark’ representing desire of colonialism. Through the narrative, Kim, Sa-liang reflects his critical mind interrogating and testifying deceitfulness and fictiveness of the Japanese policy under the slogan “Naeseon ilche: Japan and Korea are One Entity”. The work, however, shows his agitation tempted by desire from colonialism, while he can not force his way to action for nationalistic intention which is resolved in In to the Light . This can be pointed out as a limit. Nevertheless, it is more reasonable to regard it as an irresistible limitation rather than his personal limit because pressure and violence of the era when the work was published were so extreme to bear only with individual will. It is Light and Dark that he produced in a series of struggles for keeping his action for nationalistic intention which he set as the topic in his novels, by restraining severe pressure of the era. In accordance with the interpretation, this paper judges the title of the work Light and Dark condensing awareness of a problem in the work. This is because, through the title juxtaposing ‘Light’ representing nationalistic intention with ‘Dark’ representing desire of colonialism, Kim Sa-liang sums up his existential anguish that he cannot help undergoing between opposing and conflicting two desires and orientation. ▣
