Abstract

One of the most important themes in Eugene O'Neill's plays is a problem of sense of alienation and belonging. The purpose of this thesis is to consider the aspects of sense of alienation and belonging of Yank in The Hairy Ape, early, Jim in All God's Chillun Got Wings, middle, and Edumund in Long Day's Journey into Night, late play. This thesis will study the aspects of the cause of sense of alienation and the conflict of Yank, Jim, and Edumund, and the pursuit and accomplishment of sense of belonging of them. In the case of the cause and conflict of sense of alienation, the cause of sense of alienation of Yank is the dialogue of Mildred's "Take me away! Oh, the filthy beast!" His conflict is expressed as a brooding figure, an exact attitude of Rodin's 'The Thinker.' The cause of sense of alienation of Jim is his humiliation as a Negro. His conflict is expressed as a conflict between his dream to be a White and his real identity. The cause of sense of alienation of Edumunt is his painful feeling and recognition as 'an unwanted child.' His conflict is expressed as 'not being wanted,' ‘loving death,' 'mad life,' and 'wandering.' In the case of the pursuit and accomplishment of sense of belonging, the pursuit of sense of belonging of Yank is his visit of both Fifth Avenue and Industrial Workers of the World―Local No. 57. His accomplishment of sense of belonging is his death within the monkey cage at the Zoo by a gorilla's murderous hug. The pursuit of sense of belonging of Jim is his dream to be a White such as his marrying Ella, a White and his passing the examination for the bar. His accomplishment of sense of belonging is his regression to the world of innocence and purity of childhood. The pursuit of sense of belonging of Edumund is fog, and reconciliation through the real understanding, forgiveness, and love to his family. His accomplishment of sense of belonging is his transcendence through being set free from a greedy and selfish human desire and an absurd dream. To accomplish a real sense of belonging and a salvation without a sense of alienation, we must overcome the conflict between social stratum and class of Yank, the conflict between race and skin color of Jim, and the conflict between blame and distrust of Edmund, regress to the world of innocence and purity of childhood, and achieve both our reconciliation through the real understanding, forgiveness, love to family, and our transcendence through being set free from a greedy and selfish human desire and an absurd dream. And Eugene O'Neill suggests this as an important theme in The Hairy Ape, early, All God's Chillun Got Wings, middle, and Long Day's Journey into Night, late play.
