『파이돈』, 『파이드로스』와 『국가』를 통해 본 플라톤의 신체와 영혼의 가치이원적 관계

본 연구의 목적은 신체와 영혼에 관한 플라톤의 사상을 체계적으로 이해하는 데 있다. 이러한 연구를 위하여 연구자는 플라톤의 대화편을 통하여 그의 신체와 영혼 개념을 살펴보았다. 일반적으로 신체와 영혼에 관한 플라톤의 사상은 영육이원론으로 언급되며 영혼에 비해 신체를 멸시하는 쪽으로 이해되어 왔다. 하지만 이와 달리 교육론에 있어서는 신체의 중요성이 강조되기도 하였다. 이러한 불일치 속에서 신체와 영혼에 대한 플라톤의 일관된 사상을 읽어내기 위해, 본 연구는 플라톤의 대화편 『파이돈』, 『파이드로스』와 『국가』에 나타난 신체와 영혼 개념을 분석하였다. 먼저 『파이돈』에서는 이데아로 향한 영혼의 다가감에 있어 신체를 통한 쾌락의 추구를 지나치게 경계한 나머지 신체와 영혼의 극단적인 대립구도 하에서 영혼과 신체와 단절된 영혼을 강조하였다. 이러한 단절은 『파이드로스』에서 극복된다. 여기에서 영혼은 운동의 원인으로 신체에 관계하며 영혼의 속성과 상징적 모습은 신체와 유사한 관계 속에서 묘사되는 것이다. 마지막으로 『국가』에서 체육은 신체가 아닌 영혼의 격정적인 부분을 교육하는 중요한 수단이며 수호자 교육과 철인통치자를 양육하는 중요한 요건이 된다. 결과적으로 본 논문은 신체에 관한 가치 이원론적 주장은 플라톤의 체계에서 그 근거가 희박하며, 오히려 플라톤은 체육을 통한 인간의 완성을 말하고 있음이 주장된다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to understand of the body and soul in Plato's philosophy. Plato is represented the dualism that is known to despise the body. But in education, he argue the importance of a physical training. These ideas of Plato on the body studied by Phaedo, Phaedrus and Republic. Plato demonstrates immortality of soul in Phaedo, based on resemblance between Idea and soul. So body and soul to make such a stark confrontation with an emphasis on Idea and immortality of the soul, body and soul from the interrupt. In Phaedrus, this disconnect is overcome. Soul is the cause of the movement in the relationship between body and soul, and is depicted in relation to the body. Finally, in the Republic, sport serves the educational objectives of personal virtue, intellectual achievement, and political harmony. Further, Sport is an important educational means of the soul. And the best potential philosophers will be made on the basis of physical test. They demonstrate that the struggle for wisdom demands qualities in the soul similar to those demanded by athletic ability. In conclusion, Plato's body dualism has no evidence. And Plato wanted to make a complete human being through sport.
