이 논문은 카르티에 브레송이 말한 ‘결정적 순간’ 개념의 의미를 파악하기 위한 목적으로 작성됐다. 카르티에 브레송의 ‘결정적 순간’ 개념은 운명을 좌지우지하는 굉장히 중요하고 모든 것이 집약돼 있는 단하나뿐인 순간이라는 뜻으로 이해되는 경우가 많다. 하지만 카르티에브레송이 말하고자 했던 사진의 순간은 그렇게까지 ‘결정적 순간’은 아니다. 초현실주의와 공산주의의 영향을 받아 사회적 비판의식을 가진카르티에 브레송은 르포르타주 사진을 촬영하는 데 일생을 바쳤다. 그는 사진이란 현실과의 우연한 만남에서 현실의 의미를 식별하고 표현하는 것으로 봤다. 카르티에 브레송이 말한 ‘결정적 순간’은 사진가의머리, 눈, 마음이 구체적 현실과 만나 그 현실을 인지하는 사건으로서의 순간이다. 그 순간은 사진가와 현실의 우연한 만남의 순간이지만 사진가가 어떤 목적의식을 갖고 그 현실을 찾아다닌다는 점에서 내용의인과성과 형식의 필연성이 동시에 드러나는 순간이기도 하다. 그렇기에‘결정적 순간’은 순수한 주관적 우연의 순간도 아니고 카이로스의 결정성을 가진 순간도 아니며 함축적 순간의 상징성을 가진 순간도 아니다. 그 순간은 사회적 맥락 안에서 드러나는 객관적 우연의 순간이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to understand the meaning of the concept of the instant décisif(decisive moment) proposed by Cartier-Bresson. Cartier-Bresson's concept of the instant décisif is often understood to mean the only crucial moment that reveals the essential truth of the event. It tends to be interpreted as kairos, ancient Greek word meaning critical moment. But Cartier-Bresson used the word instant instead of moment. In the French, the word instant refers to a punctual time as a pure event while the word moment has a meaning of movement. So Kairos is related to moment rather than instant. Cartier-Bresson, influenced by surrealism and communism, dedicated his life to photography as a photojournalist. For him, taking a picture means recognizing and expressing the meaning of an event in an accidental encounter with that event. So the instant décisif is the moment when the photographer's head, eye and heart meet and recognize a concrete reality. The moment in which the head, eye and heart of a photojournalist intervene is the instant décisif. It may be revealed later that this instant décisif was a critical moment or a pregnant moment. But for Cartier-Bresson, the most important thing was to enjoy the act of photographing that consist in finding an instant which is more or less decisive.
