이 글의 목적은 근대 계몽기획과 세계화 논의의 진면목에 기초하여 재근대화의 논의구도를 엄밀하고 다각도로 해명하는 것이다. 이 글의 기본적 시각은 근대화론자와 탈근대화론자간의 논쟁이 계몽기획을 부당하게 단순화시킨 반편의 합리성에 대한 논쟁으로, 기본적으로 ‘1단계 근대화’의 지평에서 이루어졌다는 것이다. 재근대화 논의는 근대화와 탈근대화간의 오해로 가득 찬 논쟁을 극복한 제3의 길이다. 우선 재근대화 논의가 가진 개념적 혼란을 방지하고 본격적 논의를 위해 몇 가지 예비적 개념규정을 시도하고 있다. 그리고 재근대화 논의를 추상적 논리가 아닌 ‘시대진단학’으로서 세계화라는 우리시대의 ‘조용한 혁명’을 근대화의 연속/단절의 축에 입각하여 분석하고 있다. ‘근본화(radicalization)’ 테마는 계몽의 현실비판/자기비판의 축으로 재근대화의 구조와 과정을, ‘포용(inclusion)’테마는 이성의 복수/단수를 축으로 재근대화의 다차원성과 모순을 분석하고 있다. 재근대화의 논의구도를 요약하면 성찰성(지식)과 재귀성(의도하지 않은 결과)은 재근대화로의 이행의 동력이며 의사소통혁명, 지식기반경제, 탈냉전, 개인화의 총체적인 변동인 세계화는 배경을, 제조된 위험은 그 성격을 의미하고 배제(원자화)는 지양대상을, 포용(개인화)은 목적이며 근본화는 그에 대한 합리성의 재구성적 자기비판의 응전이자 수단이다. 그리고 재근대화 논의의 정치적함의는 ‘제3의 길’이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to elucidate the discourse of reflexive modernization based on the exact interpretation of Enlightenment project and globalization. The perspective of this article is that the dispute between modernist and postmodernist is on semi-rationality, namely ‘the first phase modernization’. The discourse of reflexive modernization is the third way between modernization and postmodernization. The continuation/discontinuation of modernization on ‘globalization’ theme, the criticism/self-criticism of Enlightenment on ‘radicalization’ theme and the singularity/plurality of rationality on ‘inclusion’ theme are analyzed . To sum up, the motors of reflexive modernization are reflection(knowledges) and reflexivity(unintended consequences). Its background is globalization consisted of communicative revolution, knowledge-based economy, post-Cold War, individualization. Its contradiction is between inclusion and exclusion characterized as manufactured risk. Its response is radicalization as reconstructive self-criticism. Its political meaning is ‘The Third Way’ politics.
