Abstract

This paper studies the conjugation and underlying form of the verbal stems ending with glottal sound in Ulsan sub-dialect based on the phonological character. In this area, two syllables verbal stems ending with 'u' didn't change into the verbal stems ending with glottal sound. And the verbal stems ending with 'i' underwent the assimilation of the vowels affected by preceded vowel when they were combined with the ending '-a/-ə', except for some. Also some two syllables verbal stems ending with 'u' were combined with the ending '-aX'. The verbal stems ending with glottal sound is divided into the multiple underlying forms and the single underlying forms. Among the multiple underlying forms containing the glottal sound, the stems whose multiple underlying forms are all of the stems ending with consonant are the 󰁚Xŋh-/Xŋkʰ-󰁚, 󰁚Xlh-/Xlk-󰁚, 󰁚Xlh-/Xl-󰁚, 󰁚Xt-/Xtʔ-󰁚. And the stem of which only some underlying form is the stems ending with consonant is the 󰁚Xh-/XE-󰁚. Among the single underlying forms, there are the stems with ending 'h, ʔ and the stems with ending 'nh, lh, ŋh'. The factors of these changes of underlying form are the confusion of the aspirated and glottal sound, reanalysis, sound change, hiatus, prononciation of the entire of conjugation.
