Abstract

This paper analyzed korean women’s attitudes to gender-role ideology, work-family orientations and ideal family model etc. Though the changes concerning the work-family relationship in Korea are very rapid ones, the researches on those don’t seem to be sufficient. So this study tried to explore more concretely the characteristics and changes of attitudes and orientations about the work-family relationship according to women’s work experiences. This stastical research was carried on 499 married employed women, 200 married non-employed women, 200 married employed men in order to analyze the differences of attitudes and orientations. The result of the research showed the great variability of women’s attitudes between the subjective experiences and the normative expectations. Although a lot of women desired eagerly for employment, they had kept the traditional thought in which they had considered domestic works as their primary roles and hadn’t given up the home-centeredness within their self-identities. Employed women showed more egalitarian gender-role ideologies and strong work orientations consistently. But the attitudes of non-employed women was inconsistent and changeable according to situations. Sometimes they showed more traditional gender-role attitudes and strong home-centeredness than employed men. But they had plans to work simultaneously. These results helped to focus on the difficulties in ensuring real options for women to choose what to do or be in relation to work and family. Their apparent attitudes are far from’genuine choices’, most women had adaptive response according to changeable articulation of work and family. These findings will be useful for building up the ground data and making up the theoretical frameworks toward work-family reconciliation in Korea.
