Abstract
The times that appear in a journey-type novel can be divided into several kinds. They are the time of leaving, the time of journey, and the time of return. Each time is a basic component of the journey and at the same time has the feature of the inherent time of a journey-type novel. Leaving comes from the figure’s complaint about his or her routine life. Therefore, the time of leaving always implies a conflict, and contains a desperate wish for going to a better world and settling the conflict. Therefore, the time of leaving can be regarded as the time of conflict. In a journey-type novel, the time that exists from the point of the figure’s leaving until his or her return is called the time of journey. The time of journey, which takes the most part of a journey-type novel, is a time outside the routine. However, as the inside of the figure goes through a continuous rumination of the routine, the time of journey cannot be seen as completely different from or completely unrelated to the routine. Analysis of a journey-type novel shows that the time of routine is intervening in the time of journey. Such a “suddenly” formed time of journey shows that it is different from the time of routine. As the figure has been given a freedom from the constraints of the routine, he or she becomes far away from all duties and roles assigned in the routine. The freedom of the figure away from his or her duty and role makes self- reflection possible by looking into the subject’s inside that has previously been invisible. The time of journey can be viewed as the time of self- reflection and the time of exploration.
