유아의 발달특성을 고려한 미술관 교육에 대한 탐색 : 미국의 미술관 사례를 중심으로

본 연구는 유아를 위한 교육 프로그램을 성공적으로 운영하고 있는 미국소재 미술관들의 교육사례를 발달적 적합성 측면에서 분석하고, 이를 토대로 국내 미술관의 유아 프로그램 개발을 위한 시사점을 제공하고자 하였다. 연구대상은 미국의 메트로폴리탄 미술관, 필라델피아 미술관, 톨레도 미술관에서 8세 이하의 유아들을 대상으로 운영되는 여섯 개의 정기교육 프로그램들로, 프로그램에 대한 정보는 미술관 웹페이지와 문헌 조사를 통해 수집되었다. 프로그램들이 포함하고 있는 학습요소에 대한 분석결과, 모든 프로그램은 전시장과의 밀접한 연계 하에 운영되고 있었고, 대부분이 놀이/그림책 활동, 토의, 실기활동의 요소를 동시에 포함하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 국내 미술관이 유아 학습자의 발달적 요구를 충족하고 그 교육적 효과를 높일 수 있는 프로그램을 개발하기 위해서는, 1) 전시연계의 강화, 2) 놀이나 그림책 활동의 포함, 3) 토의와 실기활동의 균형 잡힌 구성, 4) 다양한 테마의 사용, 5) 교육담당자의 유아미술교육에 대한 전문성 강화가 필요하다는 것을 제안하였다.
Abstract
This study examined the early childhood education programs in traditional art museums in the United States, and analyzed each program in terms of its developmental appropriateness. Based on the analysis, the study provided the implications for art museum education in Korea. Six regular programs for young children under age 8 were selected from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Toledo Museum of Art. Data were collected from museums' web pages and previous studies. All programs appeared to closely connect to exhibitions in the museums, and most of them consisted of developmentally appropriate activities for young children (i.e., play/picture book activities, discussion, studio activities). The following suggestions were made for designing developmentally appropriate early childhood program in art museums in Korea: 1) close connection to the museum's exhibits, 2) inclusion of play or picture book activities, 3) balanced experience between discussion and studio activities, 4) use of a theme that varied regularly, 5) educator's specialization in early childhood art education.
