Abstract
This paper proposes to focus on the poetics and conditions of prosopopeia in the ‘Suseok (viewing stone') Poems' by the poets Bak Du-jin and Jeon Bong-geon. Every poem contains an imaginative power of personification that gives life to dead objects, and it is possible to say that personification is the figure of speech most frequently employed in lyric poetry. Poems are created following prosopopeia's desire to give life to dead things, lament lost objects, endow them with names and forms and produce voice and discourse from their lips. Hillis Miller has called that the desire of Pygmalion, who fell in love with a statue that after fervent prayer became a living woman he could even marry. From the 1970s through the 1980s, the poets Bak Du-jin and Jeon Bong-geon both passionately sought out and collected Suseok and composed Suseok poems. Bak Du-jin published the volumes “Suseok-yeoljeon” in 1973 and “Sok.Suseok-yeoljeon” in 1976, while Jeon Bong-geon published his cycle “Dol” in 1984. The two poets mainly display a poetics of prosopopeia derive from a dead, inorganic substance the form of loving subject or person that then utters living words. Bak Du-jin personifies the dead objects according to their appearances, transforming them into female bodies and celebrating them, or sometimes giving them names such as Mary, Holy Virgin, Gemma, Abraham etc then celebrating them. Sometimes he transforms them into mountains, the Korean Peninsula, the moon or the sea, some other natural object, or employs ideation, transforming them into eternal purity, love, hate, anger, joy, wisdom etc. If the Suseok poems by Bak Du-jin, compared to those by Jeon Bong-geon, feel conceptual and abstract, it can be considered to be caused by that ideation. Bak Du-jin mainly personifies through a metaphorical imagination the Suseok as human-like beings with human qualities which are then celebrated. But while he endows the stones with names, faces, giving them forms, he also despairs on account of division and impossibility of communication, being unable to make the stones speak. He shows the coexistence of a Pygmalion-like desire to give life to dead things and an anti-Pygmalion despair on being unable to bring forth the discourse of the stone's inwardness. Unlike him, Jeon Bong-geon prefers to employ metonymy produced by the imagination acting in a spacial contiguity with the place where the stones are collected. He personifies the stones by connecting them to some kind of historical, social or political context, his own experiences in the Japanese period, the Korean War, national division. The personality of the stones Jeon Bong-geon personifies is profoundly influenced by the events and context of the district or village from which it came, and the voice in the stone resulting from that context acts as a story-teller. Therefore, the stones of Jeon Bong-geon are transformed into stones with personal, buried stories resulting from various historic tragedies, thus gaining a real life. The work of prosopopeia undertaken by Jeon Bong-geon is the work of mourning for any of history's nameless dead, the work of bringing healing and release to the pain (han) of the Korean people, hardened like stone by the tragedies of Japanese colonialism, the Korean War, the division of Korea. Since the story proper to each separate stone is told as a metonomic narrative linked to the spatial contiguity, the place where each stone once lay, his Suseok poems are extremely concrete and realistic. We have analysed the differences in the Pygmalion-like desires of the poets Bak Du-jin and Jeon Bong-geon to give life to the dead substance of stones by using imaginative prosopopeia and personification in their ‘Suseok (viewing stone') Poems’.
