Abstract

This study is concentrated on the allegoric imagination of Susok Poems by Park Du Jin which were written of the water－made stones. He achieved a monumental success of an formation and development for allegoric imagination in the history of Korean poetry . The stone is an objective which connects the symmetrical two worlds, the nature and God. The appearance of a stone indicates the sublime messages beyond men's desires. Especially, in his latter poetic period, the stone was used as the mediation which expresses the critical consciousness of the reality and the religious reliance on God. The stone what is called Susok eventually has obtained the beauty of the immutability, the infinity and the art by the almost permanent stream of water and time. Writing the serious of the Susok poems, Park Du Jin performed the following steps in order to mediate between the nature and God. At first, he approaches to a certain stone in ‘response’ to the religious ‘summons’. Then he ‘meditates’ and waits for a while until hears the voice revealing the purpose of epiphany from the absolute being. As he notices the kairos, he serves faithfully noting down the moral message word for word. And finally as a excellent skillful poet he refines the style and the words of the Susok poems. Park Du Jin remained some significant meaning in the history of Korean modern poetry as follows.: First, Park Du Jin was a diligent paragon of the poet survived in south Korea. Second, he expanded the poetic materials, the subjects and images. Third, he systematized the mechanism of the allegoric imagination in Korean modern poetry. Park Du Jin was a so vehement devotee as realizing a specific religious messages from every stone which he discovered. However his moral critic warning poems do not expose the conventional religious enthusiasm. His Susok poems remind us the Divine Providence which encourages the good and punishes the evil through the allegories of the religious images under the Yusin－the Revitalizing Reforms system. We can read from his Susok poems the early Christians’ view of the salvation which had intended to overthrown the unjust government and establish a ideal world.
