Abstract

The aim of this study was to reveal the speech behaviors and cultural characteristics of medical doctors from Japan and Korea by examining the aspects of Japanese and Korean doctors’ re-proposal strategies utilized after a patient’s non-positive response, using medical dramas from the two countries. The analysis results showed that doctors from both countries most frequently used the strategy of delivering medical opinions as experts in the re-proposal. However, Japanese doctors tended to mix other strategies appropriately, while Korean doctors tended to concentrate on the strategy of delivering medical opinions. A relatively significant aspect of the use of strategies by doctors from both countries was “the cause of the patient’s response,” and there was a clear difference when the cause of the reaction was related to the patient’s personal matters rather than to the treatment itself. This was shown to be a difference in patient care. Japanese doctors remained relatively neutral as medical scientists and appeared to refrain from intervening in the patient’s personal matters. On the other hand, in the process of asking about or accepting patient’s intentions to help them interpret and judge the situation, doctors in Korea showed a tendency to incorporate the patient’s personal matters into the context analysis. From this, one can see that doctors in both countries differ in their treatment attitudes toward patient’s personal matters, which was indicated by the difference in the strategies used. These differences between countries are thought to be due to cultural and emotional differences. The results of this research will be useful as cultural learning materials to help people have satisfying and safe medical experiences by reducing the embarrassment and mutual misunderstandings that may be caused by doctors’ speeches when experiencing treatment in a hospital in either Japan or Korea.
