Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to newly examine two units of metaphor. The existing Korean terms for “tenor” and “vehicle” can be rendered, in their literal translation into English, as “original concept” and “auxiliary concept.” However, unlike the relationship implied by the words “original” and “auxiliary,” the pair of utits take neither the form of the “original vs. copy” opposition nor the “tenor vs. vehicle” opposition. A metaphor is comprised of images, a fact which has several implications. 1) The productivity of a metaphor lies in its engagement of the senses, which are stimulated by sense impressions, or in other words by images in the broadest understanding of the term. 2) While a concept is tied to a single meaning, an image can have several meanings. 3) As such, the idea of the “conceptual image” is a contradiction in terms. Depending on the agent involved in a metaphor, and his or her relationship to the world, the utits of a metaphor can vary, and constitute three types or models of metaphor: 1) subject and subject-image, 2) subject-image and world-image, and 3) world-imageⅠ and world-imageⅡ. Since the last model also implicitly includes the subject, it can be considered the model that is typically used when discussing the utits of metaphor. The world-imageⅠ component (the tenor; as “original concept”) triggers the action of the metaphor and changes the emotional and/or physical state of the subject, thereby summoning the world-imageⅡ component. The world-imageⅠ component can be seen as an arousal-image, trigger-image, and start- and return-image. The world-imageⅡ component (the vehicle; as “auxiliary concept”) determines the trajectory of the metaphor's action, serving as a mirror of reality or revealing the relationship between the world and language. As a result, the world-imageⅡ component can be seen as an itinerant-image and reflection-image. The world is described through these coordinates, and the two utits are amplified through their interactions with each other and with the subject. Since images are capable of assuming multiple meanings, the two utits can, in theory, through these interactions produce infinite meanings.
