Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to reinterpret Kim Soo-young’s poem entitled “Telephone Story” as a poem expressing an active poetic attitude. In other words, this paper intends to assert that “Telephone Story” is not only a poem which introduces a fresh poetic diction, but also that it can be reinterpreted as one that effectively reveals Kim Soo-young’s poetic worldview during the 1960s. This means that the poetic historical significance of the poem can be reevaluated from a broader context. To this end, this paper first examines the process by which the poetic effect of “Telephone Story” occurs in relation to theatricality. According to the proposal of this paper, the utterances of “Telephone Story” ’s first and second stanzas can be divided into three layers in terms of ‘the angle of the actor’s gaze looking at the audience’. These are the utterances within the work, the utterances facing outside the work, and the utterances which span between the two. It is argued that the primary source of the poetic effect of “Telephone Story” is that the three layers of utterances which cross the inside and outside of the work collide and lie side by side. This three-layer division is also applied to the full composition of the 1st to 3rd stanzas beyond the utterances of 1st and 2nd stanzas. This analysis of poetic effects and composition are further tied to the interpretation of possible meanings of poetry. In other words, it is ultimately argued that the formal composition, in which the ‘noise-performance’ of the first and second stanzas showing the ‘lateness’ of the poem is followed by the third stanza making a ‘statement’ about the ‘lateness’, can be interpreted as an expression of a willful poetic attitude : “I will be making a ‘statement’ on the ‘lateness’ of poetry which cannot be the enforcement of despair itself.” if this interpretation is valid, this paper further asserts that “Telephone Story” can be evaluated as a good poem because it can be judged that it has acquired the inherent aesthetic value that the poem is able to achieve. As such, this paper attempted to perform the systematic analysis of poetic effects and composition, the interpretation of possible meanings, and value judgment with reasons.
