최하림 시에 내재된 변환 기제 혹은 정동적 전환에 대하여 -『속이 보이는 심연으로』와 『굴참나무숲에서 아이들이 온다』를 중심으로

최하림 시인의 시를 통독하다보면 단계론적 계기들과, 이미 초기부터 내재된 시적 특성들이 가장 활발하게 교섭하며 상호변환되는 지점을 눈여겨보지 않을 수 없다. 바로 그런 맥락에서, 제4시집 『속이 보이는 심연으로』를 주목할 수 있을 것이며 조금 더 확장하자면 제5시집 『굴참나무숲에서 아이들이 온다』에까지 시계(視界)를 넓혀볼 수 있을 것이다. 이 글은 두 시집에 주목하여, 단계론적 단절이 아니라 연쇄와 변환의 관점에서 최하림의 시를 읽으며 그 양상과 의의를 톺아보고자 하는 취지로 쓰인 것이다. 여러 산문에서 최하림 시인은 1980년도 광주에서 자행된 폭력으로부터 깊은 충격을 받았으며 이로 인해 회의와 모색을 거듭했음을 밝히고 있다. 이 충격은 두 가지 결과를 낳는다. 진보에 대한 회의와 말에 대한 회의가 그것이다. 광주의 충격과 이로 인한 회의는 정동적 동요를 일으키면서 최하림의 시에 정동적 공간을 깊이 새기게 된다. 최하림 시에 자주 등장하는 “심연”은 상징을 얻지 못한 언어가 맴돌고 가라앉는, 무수한 신호들과 자극들로 가득한 정동적 공간에 다름 아니다. 1980년대의 최하림 시인의 시에 심연이 빈번하게 등장하는 까닭은 세계가 우선은 표상과 재현 이전으로 물러나고 정동이 전경화되기 때문이다. 최하림의 시에서 수직적 이원성에 기초한 상징이 아니라 실재들을 파동의 전도체로 규정하는 수평적 리얼리즘이 발현되기 시작하는 지점이 바로 여기다. 이제 사물들은 시계(視界) 안에 늘어선다. 시인은 시각적 직투(直投) 형식으로 이를 계량하는데 이 시각적 직투 형식은 충격과 회의를 넘어 비로소 세계와의 감응을 가능하게 하는 시적 기획의 일환으로 자리매김된다.
Abstract
The main focus of this paper is to elucidate the causes and process of the change in Choi, Ha-rim's poems written in the 1980s and 1990s. As Choi, Harim wrote in his literary essays, Gwangju pro-democracy movement and the violence exerted by the military forces to suppress the people were the major causes of his change. That shock caused two kinds of skepticism. The one is about the progress of history and the second one is about the power of language. These two sorts of doubt led him to affective fluctuations. That is why we can find so vast affective space in Choi, Ha-rim's poems written in the 1980s. In that context, the image of "the abyss" can be regarded as an exemplary one expressing inner conflict and doubt. The world is not the object of representation anymore. So, Choi, Ha-rim starts to depict the internal state of his mind. In the 1990s, Choi develops the poetic methods of sympathy. The direct depiction of the landscape is how he chose to express the affect aroused while he tried to establish horizontal realsm.
