Abstract
This study refers to the implicitation strategy of the address term ‘Uri’ in Korean on the translated text in Japanese from Korean novels. Implicitation in translation is the technique in which what is explicit in the source text is implicitly translated into the target text. Since many students are worried about how to translate ‘Uri’ which is easily implied, the purpose of this study is to examine under what circumstances the implicitation of ‘Uri’ occurs. After classifying ‘Uri’ into three definitions, the researcher examined the existence of the implicitation for each of the three definitions. Which is the most common example, the rate of the implicitation was the lowest with 16.2%, Despite being translated as 'Watashitachi (we)' in Japanese, readability was not greatly affected. However, as an example of non-implicit translation, not only ‘Watashitachi’, but also various address terms such as ‘Wareware’, ’Bokura’, ’Uchi」(we)’ were used according to the situation, position, and gender of the speaker. Definition 2) is not accompanied by an auxiliary in ST and is often used as a call or as an idiomatic expression. So, this usage is not so common in Japanese ‘Watashitachi’. Therefore, it seemed that the translators had some difficulties in choosing the expressions corresponding to this expression each time. Definition 3) is the definition with the highest implicitation rate, and in the case of non-implicitaion, ‘Uchi’ was the most used. As a result of the examination, the high implicitation rate was in the order of definitions 3), 2) and 1). The translation of ‘Uri’ used not only ‘Watashitachi’ but also various expressions that fit the context in Japanese. Since most of the students have been studying literary translation for less than a year, there was a lack of readability, but it turned out that they were working on the translation while incorporating such implicitation methods with their ideas.
