Abstract

In the introductory stage of Japanese language learning, differences in learners‘ proficiency necessitate the use of diverse instructional approaches. In particular, providing pre-service teachers with opportunities to experience various teaching methods firsthand is significant not only for improving their Japanese proficiency but also for enhancing their teaching competencies. This study implements shadowing activities focused on simple conversational phrases to facilitate accessibility for beginner-level learners. Additionally, it seeks to allow pre-service teachers to experience the effectiveness of shadowing firsthand and recognize it as a viable learning strategy. To achieve this, learners engaged in self-directed shadowing practice over a designated period, and their self-reflection records were analyzed to assess the effectiveness of shadowing as a learning method and identify potential areas for improvement. The findings indicate that despite the short duration of the shadowing activities, learners reported positive learning experiences at various levels. They also became more aware of their weaknesses and actively sought ways to address them, which contributed to an increase in learning motivation. Furthermore, shadowing provided an opportunity for learners to experience more effective learning strategies, ultimately enhancing their confidence in acquiring Japanese. However, it was also observed that zero-level learners require instructor intervention and feedback to fully benefit from shadowing. This study suggests that experiential learning and self-reflection play a crucial role in developing teaching competencies within the field of Japanese language education. It emphasizes the need for learners to engage in diverse teaching methodologies and integrate them with self-reflection in future Japanese language education settings.
