Abstract

This study aims to compare the evaluations of native Japanese speakers and Korean learners of Japanese whose first language is Korean regarding how the formation of adjacency pairs in Japanese greetings influences interpersonal relationships. The survey examined three situations: (1) when an adjacency pair fails to occur, (2) when an adjacency pair occurs but lacks equivalence, and (3) when an adjacency pair occurs with equivalence. Participants evaluated each case in terms of ‘negative impact on interpersonal relationships,’ ‘negative impression,’ and ‘sense of discomfort.’ The results indicate that the absence of an adjacency pair received the most negative evaluations, with native Japanese speakers consistently giving more severe assessments than learners. Even learners with long study experience did not reach the evaluative level of native speakers. In addition, native speakers responded more sensitively than learners to adjacency pairs lacking equivalence, suggesting the possibility that such subtle differences may affect the formation of long-term relationships. Furthermore, it was observed that some learners gave more negative evaluations than native speakers even when adjacency pairs were properly established with equivalence. This tendency appears to reflect the Korean communicative perspective that values intimacy, rooted in the cultural concept of uri (‘we’). These findings demonstrate that differences in cultural background can be a source of friction in intercultural communication, even in routine greeting behavior. For Japanese language education, the results suggest the importance of teaching not only fixed expressions but also the cultural intentions and communicative nuances underlying such behaviors.
