Abstract
As the number of stakeholders involved in supporting foreigners, including Japanese language education, continues to grow, this study explores whether case method discussions can serve as an effective platform for experts and non-experts in Japanese language education to learn from each other. To this end, a case method discussion was conducted with 18 participants, including both Japanese language education experts and non-experts. The discussion was based on a case material featuring a university Japanese language teacher, aiming to foster an understanding of the importance of engaging in discussions with individuals from diverse positions and areas of expertise to gain new perspectives. Following the discussion, one expert and one non-expert from the participant group were interviewed to explore their thoughts during the discussion and the reasoning behind them. The analysis focused on identifying ‘new ideas and perspectives,’ using keywords such as ‘shocking’ and classifying responses into ‘acceptance’ and ‘resistance,’ while also examining the factors that influenced these reactions. The findings revealed that participants were often surprised by statements from individuals with different perspectives. Once they acknowledged these alternative viewpoints, they were able to refine and expand their own thoughts. However, they also displayed resistance when confronted with perspectives that challenged their values, particularly those shaped by personal experience. These reactions were triggered by the teacher's facilitation, which encouraged participants to recognize underlying issues, as well as by the realistic and concrete insights shared by other participants. Discussions based on case materials allowed participants to engage with different viewpoints on the issue, while the case method encouraged them to approach the discussion as active stakeholders. As a result, the case method proved effective in providing an opportunity for participants to reconsider their own values by reflecting on both their acceptance and resistance to differing perspectives.
