중도 시각장애인의 경우 실명에 따른 두려움, 대인관계의 변화, 가족 내의 역할 변화, 장애 수용의 어려움 등 많은 어려움에 직면하게 된다. 이들은 선천적 시각장애인들과 달리 장애에 대한 적응과 재활 과정에서 다른 관점의 접근이 필요하다. 독립생활센터를 매개로 하는 독립생활 재활 모델은 중도 시각장애인들의 재활에 있어 매우 효과적인 것으로 알려져 있다. 특히, 독립생활 재활의 핵심 서비스 중 하나인 동료상담은 중도 시각장애인의 장애수용과 독립생활 능력 향상에 크게 기여하는 것으로 알려져 있다. 하지만, 우리나라의 경우 아직 중도 시각장애인을 대상으로 하는 동료상담 프로그램이 활성화되어 있지 않음은 물론, 관련 연구 또한 매우 부족한 실정이다. 따라서 이 연구의 목적은 독립생활 재활과 독립생활센터, 동료상담의 개요와 이를 통해 제공가능한 대표적 중재 프로그램 등을 개괄적으로 소개함으로서 중도 시각장애인에 대한 동료상담 서비스 제공의 필요성을 환기시키는 데에 있다.
Abstract
People who became blind or visually impaired in the middle of their lives encounter anxiety, change in interpersonal relationship, difficulty accepting his or her disability, and role change in the family. They tend to require different intervention in the adaptation and acceptance of his or her visual impairment as compared to those who became blind or visually impaired at the early age. An independent living rehabilitation intervention, provided through a Center for Independent Living, is widely regarded as a viable rehabilitation option for people with adventitious blindness. In particular, peer counseling, one of four core services of Centers for Independent Living, hhas been recognized as playing an instrumental role in facilitating an acceptance of vision loss as well as improving an independent living capacity for people who became adventitiously blind or visually impaired. Despite its significance, peer counseling program for people with visual impairment or blindness in Korea is not fully explored, let alont the related research. Thus, this brief review paper aims to provide an overview of peer counseling in the context of independent living rehabilitation intervention.
