Abstract
Purpose: This study examined the differences in Braille reading fluency performance of visually impaired adults aged 20-69 years old according to text type and age, and investigated the correlation between demographic variables and reading fluency performance by age. Method: The subjects of the study were 268 domestic visually impaired adults aged 20 to 69. The test tool used was the Braille reading fluency subtest of the 2023 National Institute of the Korean Language Braille Proficiency Test. Visually impaired adults read literary and non-literary texts, respectively, and the number of correctly read syllables per minute was calculated and the types of incorrect responses were analyzed for their performance. In addition, we analyzed age-specific correlations according to years of education, period of using Braille, age of starting Braille, period of blindness, use of hands, data type, and occupation. Results: People in their 20s showed significantly higher performance than people in their 40s, 50s, and 60s in both literary and non-literary writing, and those in their 30s, 40s, and 50s showed significantly better performance in non-literary writing. The correlation analyses were differences in the variables that showed significant correlations depending on age, but the variable of age at starting Braille showed a significant correlation in all age groups. Conclusion: Through this study, we were able to confirm performance levels by age as basic data on Braille reading fluency for visually impaired adults aged 20 to 69 years in Korea, and confirm the correlation between demographic variables and reading fluency.
