Abstract
Purpose: This study aimed to analyze gender differences in self-perceived health status, physical fitness, and physical activity among Korean individuals with visual impairments to provide foundational data for developing health promotion policies and physical activity programs. Method: Data from 1,631 visually impaired adults (1,061 males, 570 females) were analyzed using the 2020 Survey on Physical activity and Sports for People with Disabilities. The survey collected information on participants' self-perceived health status, physical fitness, and physical activity patterns. Chi-square tests were conducted to examine gender differences. Results: First, males showed more positive perceptions than females in both self-perceived health and physical fitness status. Males reported significantly higher positive responses of "good" and "very good" in health status, with similar trends observed in physical fitness. Second, while no gender differences were found in exercise frequency, males showed higher participation rates in moderate to high-intensity activities and longer duration exercises compared to females. Third, significant differences were found in preferred exercise types. While walking was preferred by both genders, males showed higher preference for resistance training and cycling, while females preferred swimming. Conclusion: Korean individuals with visual impairments showed distinct gender differences in their health status, physical fitness, and physical activity patterns. These findings suggest the need for gender-specific approaches in developing health promotion policies and programs for individuals with visual impairments.
