초록

This study aims to explore the contextual factors contributing to the interruption, resumption, and eventual cessation of Korean language learning among immigrants with refugee backgrounds. The research was conducted through narrative inquiry with couples who have applied for refugee status in Korea and have experienced different stages of Korean language acquisition. The study critically examines the institutional and sociocultural contexts that hinder these couples' language learning processes. The findings reveal that, despite the availability of state-sponsored language classes, refugees face significant barriers that limit their practical access to these opportunities. Additionally, the sociocultural context indicates that these couples struggle to attain the status of 'legitimate speakers' in Korean society, a challenge exacerbated by the strong monolingualism and lack of linguistic goodwill. The contribution of this research lies in its focus not only on the outcome of language learning cessation but also on the comprehensive processes leading to this result, offering a holistic understanding of the challenges faced by refugee-background immigrants in language acquisition.
