A Study on the Issues of Vocabulary Selection for Korean Language Education –Based on Literature Review and Specialist Awareness Survey

The purpose of this study is to examine the issues of selecting and grading Korean language education vocabulary in existing studies, and to propose proper approaches for selecting desirable vocabulary. Firstly, for the unit of vocabulary selection, a meaning-centered unit was proposed that combined high-frequency productive affixes such as `-하다' and `-되다' in the `lemma' unit. Secondly, the study also examined problems of the previous studies regarding the corpus and stressed the need for constructing a balanced and representative corpus. Thirdly, the study confirmed the necessity of artificial vocabulary grading for educational efficiency through a survey. Fourthly, the study identified problems in the previous methodology of vocabulary selection and proposed alternatives, suggesting that criteria related to the applicability of the curriculum, in addition to frequency, should be considered. Finally, the study emphasized the importance of judgment based on objective indicators in the compromise vocabulary selection method. Ultimately, the study provides valuable insights into the selection and grading of Korean language education vocabulary and serves as a reference for future studies in this field.
