Abstract
This study analyzes the usage patterns of Korean passive verbs from a constructional perspective and explores how these findings can inform Korean language education. Traditional grammar instruction tends to treat passives as rule-governed transformations of active verbs, often focusing on the formal attachment of passive suffixes such as -i-, -hi-, -li- and -ki-. However, this approach does not fully account for the diverse meanings and syntactic behaviors of passive verbs used in practical Korean language usage. To address this limitation, the study examines eight passive verbs using data from Korean language textbooks, learner corpora, and native-speaker corpora. The analysis reveals that many passive constructions occur in forms and meanings that diverge from canonical active-passive pairs, highlighting the need for a more flexible and meaning/construction-oriented approach. Based on these findings, the study proposes a usage-based pedagogy that emphasizes frequent patterns, collocational cues, and constructional meanings. This approach can help learners better understand and produce natural passive expressions by focusing on form-meaning pairings rather than abstract rules alone.
