Abstract
During the period 2014–2019, Jeonnam’s export growth in seaweed has remained below that of the whole nation. It can be seen that Jeonnam’s growth of seaweed exports has decreased at a greater rate or has increased at a smaller rate compared to the growth rate of the whole nation’s export of seaweed products. Constant Market Share (CMS) analysis is a very useful tool for understanding and assessing the changes in the exports of a country. A change in demand for imports is evaluated through the comparison of a constant market share and a changing market share. Standard shift-share analysis relies on three components, which are the national-growth component, the industry-mix component, and the competitive or differential-shift component. The shift-share analysis shows that both the sectoral effect and competitiveness effect are favorable to seaweed export to Japan, while the competitive effect registers unfavorable conditions for export growth for China, Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore, and Vietnam. Both the sectoral effect and the comp effect are negative for Thailand and Singapore. The constant market share analysis bespeaks that for Japan, negative commodity composition effect has a larger influence on Jeonnam seaweed exports than other effects. Jeonnam’s competitiveness which is measured in terms of market share has the most powerful influence on Jeonnam’s export performance to China but Jeonnam then loses its advantage over Taiwan, Singapore, and Vietnam.
