Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the underlying theories of the concept literacy, and the curriculum and methods of literacy education in the 1-2 grades of elementary school. The concept of literacy in its early period meant only reading, and then included the 4-language behaviors as a whole. But as the development of cognitive psychology, the increase of the demandstirom high technological society, the concept of literacy extended widely, as we knowtirom such phrases as ‘language and literacy’, ‘literacy and high-order thinking skills’, ‘literacy and communication’, ‘literacy and education’, ‘literacy, society, and culture’, ‘literacy and national development’, ‘literacy and democracy’. In this study, I examined the concept of literacy in two aspects: One is the underlying psychological theories in the concept of literacy, and the other is the curriculum and instructional methods of literacy education. As of the underlying theories, I examined and discussed the characteristics of five theories such as cognitive psychology, schema theories, constructivism, reader response theory, and sociocultural theory. In the study, I also examined the curriculum and instructional methods of literacy education in the 1-2 grades of elementary school. The basic approaches I took in the examination was the wholesome psychological process of literacy, which means, the reading process includes the whole processes from decoding, to word recognition, sentence comprehension, reading strategies, and to the meta-cognitive knowledge and monitoring. And I suggested two instructional models, Pearson’s ‘Explicit Instructional Model’ and the ‘Process-centered Comprehension Model’ that was developed by the writer of this paper, Myeong-wan Noh. These two instructional models heavily depended upon the Vygotsky’s ZPD(Zone of Proximal Development) and Scaffolding concepts. The results of this study show two points: One is that the concept of literacy is highly reader-based cognitive, constructive, and sociocultural processes, and the other is that the teaching of literacy even in the early stages of elementary school should be reader-based strategic, and self-regulatory learning activities.
