고등학교 ‘고전’ 교과의 현황과 문제점 -수도권 고등학교를 중심으로-

Abstract

The subject of “Classics,” which was introduced in high schools in 2014, was added as an elective subject in the Revised Curriculum of 2011. Despite its intent of helping learners cultivate their culture and “implementing integrated Korean activities based on the assumption of top-level Korean abilities,” however, it is still subjected to controversies in schools due to its ambiguous status and identity as a subject. This study thus set out to examine whether the subject of “Classics” would be taught in a direction of making a contribution to talents equipped with new culture of humanities. Chapter 2 reviewed the introduction backgrounds and curriculums of “Classics” in the Curriculum of 2011. Chapter 3 analyzed the current state of “Classics” textbooks with a focus on Samgukyusa commonly found in three kinds of textbook. Chapter 4 looked into the selection, actual education, and problems of “Classics” based on a survey conducted at 60 high schools in Gyeonggi Province and Seoul. As a result, the information of a subject “Classics” has not been provide enough and has confirm the lack of number of teachers and learning materials at schools. It appears to be an immediate problem to solve on the shortage of number of classes, an absence of subject’s guidebook and uncertain connectivity of college entrance examination. Because of student’s indifference and uncertain connectivity of college entrance examination, it is true that certain high schools consists classes with minimum subjects. It is a fact to pay attention some junior classes in high school mainly teach about relate to college entrance exams materials ignoring textbook already. The problems identified in the present study will hopefully be supplemented and thus contribute to the successful education of “Classics,” a new subject added to Korean in a long time. The findings are expected to provide an opportunity for the experts to engage in enough reflection and review in the next Curriculum whose discussions have recently begun. In short, the study highlights that it will be inevitable to make major revisions and supplementations to the current subject of “Classics,” whose implementation was abrupt. It is predicted that whether “Classics” will take root right or not will have huge impacts on the normalization of education in high schools in the future.
