Abstract
The year 2025 can be considered the beginning of a “new normal” in Korea’s classical novel education. With the Ministry of Education's 2022 revised Korean-language curriculum fully implemented, classical novel education faces the challenge of offering “education that meets the needs of the times.” This study analyzed the inclusion of classical novels in seven high school literature textbooks developed during this transitional period and critically examined the educational intent behind them. The analysis revealed that the current use of classical novels in revised textbooks is heavily centered on literary history knowledge, failing to explore the essence of literature and the universal meaning of human life. This leads to classical novels being perceived as a specialized genre, alien to learners, with potentially negative consequences for readers’ interest and meaning-making. Furthermore, the tendency to use classical novels as a medium for literary re-creation education risks misconstruing them as a genre characterized by simple narrative structures and conflicts, potentially hindering in-depth reading of their complex structures. These problems appear to stem from the selection criteria for classical novels included in textbooks: genre typicality, narrative clarity, reflection of contemporary social realities, and public recognition. Therefore, establishing the direction of classical novel education requires using materials that meet various achievement standards, while also reflecting on selection criteria that can re-evaluate the value of classical novels as literature that illuminates the issues of modern life.
