인도양 문화/문학 연구를 위한 제언

본 연구가 기왕의 연구와 달리 가장 집중적으로 천착하고자 하는 것은 그간 동일한 문명권, 다시 말해, 같은 아프리카 대륙의 동부해안에 위치하고 있었지만 지정학적 역학 관계의 추이에 따라 역사의 중심에서 직간접적으로 배제되었던 남동부아프리카, 즉 남아공과 소말리아 문학‘들’이 인도양을 사유한 방식을 모색하는 일이다. 본 연구자는 ‘검고 불량한 신체‘를 인도양 문학의 핵심으로 사유했던 소말리아의 작가인 누르디 파라의 작품을 분석할 것이다. 뿐만 아니라 인도양과 국토를 맞대고 있지만 근대 이후 유럽과의 친연성을 강조하던 특정 세력 때문에 목적의식적으로 사상된 인도양과의 정서적 연대감을 서사적으로 회억해내는 남아공의 문학도 검토할 것이다. 인도양 문화와 문학의 연구방법론으로는 다양한 이론들을 동원할 것이다. 가령, 레비스트로스가 『야생의 사고』에서 “담론의 비판적 언어를 창조하는 이질적인 지적 방법들의 집합이라고 정의”한 "브리콜라쥬"(bricolage) 개념을 차용할 것이다. 그는 브리콜라쥬를 신화시의 형식과 동일시하는데, 이를 다양한 지역의 문학‘들’이 수평적으로 통섭하던 인도양 문학을 분석하는데 활용할 것이다. 브로델이 독창적으로 사용한 “장기지속”과 같은 개념도 애용할 것이다. 브로델은 시간이 지나도 지각할 수 없을 정도로만 미세하게 변화하는 역사적인 특징들, 예를 들어 산맥의 형태와 바다 수위, 가옥 및 의복의 형태, 그리고 기후 및 인구 등과 같은 “장기적으로 지속하는 질료들”을 역사분석의 중심적인 매개로 삼아야 한다고 주장한다. 이는 인도양 문학의 지속적 정체성을 파악하는데 일익을 담당할 것이다. 푸코의 “담론이론”도 활용할 것이다.
Abstract
The Indian Ocean, unlike the Atlantic or the Pacific, is small enough to permit a close network of sailing routes between the lands that surrounds it. All of them are linked by their reliance on each other-each producing things(metals, animal products, spices, slaves, and other commodities) needed by the others. Sailing between them is based on the regular and predictable monsoons between India and Africa. The Ocean is more than an economic resources to Swahili people as well as Ethiopian, Somalian, South African people. The sea is the place from which comes potential wealth in the form of sailors and traders who bring goods such as cloth, beads, porcelain, arms, exotic furniture and foods, as shown in the book of Asia before Europe by Chaudhuri. This paper is focusing on african way of interpretation on the Indian Ocean civilization which persisted for a long time from the ancient times up to now. Indian Ocean was interpreted as the ocean of ‘backwardness’ and ‘barbarity’ by the West after the modern era when colonialism was introduced with a slavery system in it. After this era, Indian Ocean was invented as the other of the west. This paper is to interrogate this idea of invention as the violence performed by eurocentric ideology.
