Abstract

This paper examines the process of forming a knowledge network in Northeast Asian as a representative modern city in China after the opening of Shanghai in the middle of the 19th century. The role of Western missionaries played a large role in Shanghai becoming a central city for producing and spreading Western studies in modern East Asia. These Western missionaries have created various organizations and conducted education and publishing activities for the mission and knowledge dissemination of Chinese people. The Chinese-language Western books that were produced in this way spread to Shanghai and other parts of China, and even to Korea and Japan. Thus, Shanghai became the center of modern Northeast Asian sea knowledge network. However, In the case of Japan, from the end of the Edo Shogunate until the Meiji era, it traditionally traded with Shanghai and accepted many Chinese-language Western books produced in Shanghai. In the case of Korea, because of the policy of seclusion, it only accepted the book of Chinese-language Western books through the land transportation network with Beijing and its kind was also very limited. However, Korea is also somewhat later than Japan, but after the opening of the port, bureaucrats visited Shanghai and accepted the book produced by the missionaries in Shanghai. In addition, the transportation network is important for spreading the book produced in Shanghai to China, Korea, and Japan. A study on the transportation network in the Northeast Asian sea region, centering on Shanghai, constitutes the foundation of the study on the formation of the Shanghai Knowledge Network.
