기독교가 한국 경제성장에 미친 영향：초기 인적자본형성을 중심으로

이 논문의 목적은 기독교가 한국의 경제성장에 미친 영향을 밝히는 것이다. 한국경제는 지난 반세기 동안 놀라운 성장을 이룩했으며, 기독교도 역시 양적인 면에서 많은 성장을 했다. 그런데 한국경제의 성장에 기독교가 미친 영향에 대해서는 과소평가되어 왔다. 이 연구에서는 한국의 경제성장에 미친 기독교의 영향에 대한 연구가 매우 미진했음을 문헌조사를 통해서 보였다. 그리고 한국경제와 기독교의 성장을 개관한 후에, 한국경제성장의 요인에 대한 경제학계의 논쟁을 소개했다. 그리고 한국경제성장의 요인으로 가장 중요한 것으로 꼽히는 세 가지 중의 하나가 교육과 인적자본의 형성이라는 것을 지적한 다음에 한국 기독교가 한국 경제성장의 초기조건인 높은 인적자본 형성에 어떠한 영향을 미쳤는가를 살펴본다. 특히 이 논문에서는 한국경제성장의 초기 조건으로서 인적자본형성에 기독교가 사립학교의 설립을 통해서 크게 기여했음을 밝힘으로써 그 동안 부족했던 교회사와 경제학 분야의 학제간 연구에 기여하고자 했다.
Abstract
The purpose of this article is to virify the impact of the Christianity on the Korean economic growth. During last half century, the Korean economy experienced the amazing growth and Korean church also have grown rapidly. But the impact of the Christianity on the economic growth in Korea was under estimated. In this research, the recent researches in this field and the outline of economic growth in Korean economy and Christianity was shown. The one of the main causes of the Korean economic growth was the initial stage with high level of human capital. The Christianity had great impacts on the accumulation of the human capital in Korea by the establishment of the school in the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. In this article, the various argument on the causes of the Korean economic growth was evaluated and it was stressed how the early missionaries and churches contributed on the Korean education system. It was intended to contribute to the interdisciplinary study between the church history and economics.
