중세 예술과 교육의 만남 ― 신비와 상징 교육의 매개체로서 비잔틴과 로마네스크 양식을 중심으로

이 연구는 중세 기독교와 교육이 예술이라는 상징을 통하여 격정적으로만나고 있음을 주장한다. 예술과 교육이 격정적으로 포옹한 중세를 탐구하면서 그동안 분리되어 연구되어왔던 중세의 역사, 종교, 신학, 미학, 예술을 기독교교육의 차원에서 융합하고 재구성한다. 중세 사회에서 예술은 글을 읽고 쓸 수 없었던 대부분의 기독교인들에게 성경 이야기들과교리들을 가르치는 기독교교육의 매개체 역할을 훌륭하게 감당했다. 이 연구는 예술의 교육적 성격에 기초해서 중세 예술이 상징과 신비 교육의 매개체라는 사실을 탐구한다. 첫째 중세 예술과 교육의 관계성을 종교적인 관점에서 서술하면서, 중세 예술, 교육, 신학의 상호관계성을 탐구한다. 둘째 어거스틴(Augustine)과 아퀴나스(Aquinas)로부터 발전한 하강(신비)과 상승(상징)의 신학적 미학 그리고 성상파괴 논쟁을 통하여 형성되었던 중세 신학적 미학을 신비와 상징 교육의 관점에서 재조명한다. 셋째 중세 동방 교회의 비잔틴 양식과 서방 교회의 로마네스크양식을 신비와 상징 교육의 관점에서 재해석한다.
Abstract
This study explores the relationship between art and education in the middle age. The medieval Christianity encounters the medieval education through forms of art such as iconography, architecture, and sculpture. In this sense, this study contributes to integrating and reinterpreting history, religion, theology, and the aesthetics of the middle age in terms of the medieval education. The art within this time played a role as an educational medium that introduced and mediated the Biblical story to illiterate Christians in the middle age. This study concludes that the medieval art was the educational medium that transformed the Biblical story into a visual and sensorial text. Finally, this study matches the mystical education with the Byzantine and the symbolical education with the Romanesque.
