〈최후의 심판〉 도상의 초기 발전 양상: 9-10세기의 카파도키아 교회 벽화를 중심으로

본 연구는 비잔티움의 〈최후의 심판〉이 어떻게 시작되었고, 어떤 과정을 거쳐 완성된 형태로 발전해 가는지 그 양상을 추적하고자 한다. 〈최후의 심판〉은 9세기 후반 카파도키아의 이체레데레 성당에 처음 등장하여 여러 도상학적 시도를 거듭하며 활발히 제작되다가, 10세기 중반 괴레메 2b(최후의 심판) 성당에서 도상의 기본 체계를 완성하는 단계에 도달하였다. 괴레메 2b 성당은 도상의 초기 모색단계를 벗어나 비교적 완성된 형태를 갖추었다. 이전 시기의 성당들이 여러 새로운 구성요소를 도입하거나 변경하는 시각적 실험의 단계에 있었다면, 괴레메 2b 성당은 〈최후의 심판〉의 그리스도교적 의미가 잘 드러나도록 도상을 시각적으로 명료화하였다. 열두 사도 심판관과 세바스테의 40인의 순교자를 포함하여 거대하게 펼쳐졌던 심판석은 ‘데이시스’의 형태로 간결하게 다듬어졌다. 또한 심판의 주도권이 그리스도에게 있음을 강조하는 도상, 즉 ‘헤토이마시아’가 새롭게 도입되어 심판자 그리스도의 발아래 놓이게 되었다. 괴레메 2b 성당의 화가는 ‘파루시아’ 대신 ‘헤토이마시아’를 선택하여 재림의 종말론적 상징성을 강조하였다. 본 연구는 최근의 발굴조사 결과를 바탕으로 〈최후의 심판〉 도상의 정립 과정과 의미에 관련된 초기 발전 양상을 밝힘으로써 비잔티움 미술에 대한 이해를 심화하는 데 도움이 되고자 한다.
Abstract
This study seeks to trace how the Byzantine 〈The Last Judgment〉 began and through what processes it developed into its completed form. 〈The Last Judgment〉 first appeared in Cappadocia in the late 9th century and was actively produced through various iconographic attempts. The basic system of iconography was completed in the the Last Judgment church(2b) of Göreme in the mid-10th century. The iconography of Göreme 2b church has moved beyond its initial stage and has reached a relatively complete form. While the churches of the previous period were in the stage of visual experimentation, introducing or changing various new elements, the Göreme 2b church visually clarified the iconography to clearly reveal the Christian meaning of the Last Judgment. The huge Judgment Seat, which included the twelve apostolic judges and the 40 martyrs of Sebaste, was simply trimmed into the shape of a ‘Deisis’. Additionally, a new icon, ‘Hetoimasia,’ emphasizing that Christ takes the lead in judgment was introduced and placed at the feet of Christ the Judge. The painter of Göreme 2b church chose ‘Hetoimasia’ instead of ‘Parousia’ to emphasize the eschatological symbolism of the Second Coming. This study aims to help deepen the understanding of Byzantine art by revealing the early development aspects of 〈The Last Judgment〉 based on the results of recent excavations.
