Abstract
Bessie Head is one of the most brilliant feminist novelists in Africa. She interrogates western feminism from African perspective. Western feminism is believed to focus too much on gender-issue as well as class-issue excluding race-issue. By replacing these pre-established orders, Bessie Head presents new mode of thoughts on African feminism. Maru is one of the representative works that Bessie Head created in order to show how differently functions African feminism. Maru is a pioneering work in African novels in terms of tangibly providing the African alternative to ‘subaltern studies.’ By embracing ‘unheard voices’ from many diverse minorities, Bessie Head introduces different landscape of ‘subalterns’ to the world map of third-world feminism. Maru in this course takes a very crucial role. A mystic vision as an extended form of African realism explores new frontier of novel writing in the hand of Bessie Head so that Maru is able to be accepted as the very unique feminist novel not only in Africa but also in the world.
