Abstract
This study will analyze solution-focused therapy from the Christian perspective and provide insight on the applicability and limitation of Christian counseling. Solution-focused therapy has been more evidence based since its development from the influence of the constructivist and social constructivist psychology in the post modernist trend. Solution- focused therapy assumes that humans have strengths, wisdom, and experience for change and aims to build solutions through solution-focused questions and dialogue. Specific techniques include asking questions about pre-session change, setting solution-focused goals, miracle question, scaling questions, constructing solutions and exceptions, coping questions, taking a break and reconvening, and assigning experiments and homework assingments. In order to apply solution-focused therapy to Christian counseling, the reductionist characteristics of solution-focused therapy and the following limitations need to be recognized and complemented: the limitations of the interpretation of counselor's attitude, the view of human being, no concept of growth, solutions limited to the present life, not dealing well with the past, ignoring confrontation, interpretation, and resistance, and overlooking the benefits of psychological testing.
