Abstract
While presupposing the time-space specificity of Korea in 2025, this article aims to go beyond the constraints as much as possible and suggest the direction Christian university should move forward after the 21st century. The author seeks to find the origin of the university system in Christian optimism, which stems from the belief of the ultimate compatibility of the system of faith and reason, and tries to confirm whether it can adequately respond to the challenges of extremes that threaten such a stance. To this end, he searches what kind of structure medieval European universities created to achieve a dynamic balance of faith and reason and how the structure transformed after the modern era of the West under the rule of the Roman Catholic Church. Moreover he explores the achievements of Immanuel Kant's theory of university reform and, as a result, how distorted it was, by reviewing the reality of the university movement, which has fallen into a so-called research-oriented “multiversity” at the mid-20th century. And he considers the suggestion of Arthur Holmes, who advocated a new Christian university model, especially focusing on liberal arts education at the undergraduate university level. Finally, he demonstrates the need for a new perspective of Christian universities beyond the design of Kant and Holmes in terms of the university movement based on Christian optimism. This article is an attempt to suggest the direction of the 21st-century university movement for a dynamic balance between faith and reason, transcendence and secularity.
