성적 타자(sexual other)가 인정되는 도시 공간을 위한 시론-매춘 여성의 몸과 섹슈얼리티를 중심으로

소위 글로벌시티에서 시민들은 일상적으로 타자의 다문화적인 삶에 대면하고 있지만 성적 타자에 대한 혐오감은 줄지 않고 있는 듯하다. 특히 최근에 이러한 혐오감은 매춘여성을 향해 여과 없이 그대로 노출되고 있다. 소수자의 인정을 이야기하는 진보진영이나 시민운동가들도 유독 매춘이라는 성적 수행을 하나의 차이로 인정해야한다는 주장 앞에서는 머뭇거리고 있다. 이에 필자는 무엇보다도 근대 시민에게 부여되었던 이성애 핵가족 중심적 성 규범이 가부장적 공간분할의 규칙과 밀접하게 연관되어 있으며 이 규칙에 따라 매춘 여성의 몸이 근대적 도시공간으로부터 추방될 수밖에 없었음을 보여줄 것이다. 뿐만 아니라 필자는 근대 도시 공간 안에서 여성의 몸은 그것이 위치하는 장소에 따라 어머니와 매춘여성이라는 두 가지 서로 다른 방식으로 재현되었음을 보여주고자 한다. 그러나 여성의 몸은 기대와 달리 정해진 장소에서 정해진 모습으로만 체현되었던 것은 아니다. 어머니의 몸은 히스테리를 통해, 매춘여성의 여성의 몸은 장소이동의 전략을 통해 예측하지 못한 방식으로 자신을 드러내기도 했기 때문이다. 필자는 여기서 가정이라는 특정 공간에 갇혀있던 어머니의 몸과는 달리 매춘여성의 몸은 정해진 장소를 넘어서, 공간의 경계를 가로지르고 있으며 따라서 자신의 몸을 적극적으로 재구성할 토대를 갖게 된다는 점에 주목하고자 한다. 나아가 필자는 매춘여성과 같은 성적 타자가 도시 공간에서 인정되기 위해서는 이분법의 도식을 넘어설 필요가 있음을 주장할 것이다. 이를 위해 필자는 그로츠와 함께 몸을 살아있는 물질성으로, 공간 가로지르기의 매개 지점으로 재정립할 것이다. 그리고 이로부터 필자는 성적 타자를 인정한다는 것은 그의 “몸의 권리”를 인정하는 것임을 분명히 하고자 한다.
Abstract
In global cities, people encounter daily the others with different cultures. But the phobia against the sexual other seems to remain unchanged, especially against prostitute. Even the progressives who argue for the rights of woman and minorities are also hesitant to recognize the act of prostitution as another difference. In order to get at the root of the phobia, this paper will show first that the norms of heterosexual monogamy practiced by modern citizens are closely connected with the paternalistic binary principle of space division and this results in the construction of a sexual hierarchy where the body of prostitute cannot help but to be expelled from the urban space. This paper will also argue that according to the sexual hierarchy, the modern female bodies are represented in two different ways: the desirable body of "the mother" and the undesirable body of "the prostitute". But woman's embodiment of it is not simple. Women can reveal their bodies in a prohibited place in a unpredictable form: a body of mother expressed in hysteria and a body of prostitute appearing openly in the street. This paper highlights the fact that prostitutes can reconstruct their body through performances across the boundary between the private and public spaces while mothers within the private space are trapped in phallic representation. Furthermore the paper insists that in order to recognize the sexual other like prostitute in urban space we need a non-binary concept of "body". Recasting Elisabeth Grosz's concept of "volatile" body, the paper would redefine the body as an "active materiality" which is not only constructed by the social inscription but also responds to it. This concept of body is internal and external, private and public, and across the both spaces. Finally the paper reclaims "the right to body" of sexual others. To recognize sexual others means that we don't give them a citizenship but the right to reconstruct their bodies and to perform across the space.
