다문화가족은 가족 내에 두 개 이상의 문화가 혼합 또는 결합된 가족이다. 이렇게 언어적 배경을 달리하는 가족원들이 결합할 경우 가족원들 사이에서 2개 이상의 언어가 사용되는 것은 당연하다. 본 연구에서 다문화가족 유아의 언어 교육을 논하기 위해 도입하고자 하는 ‘상위 언어(meta-language)’는 특정한 언어 구조와는 상관없는 언어에 대한 일반적 지식, 언어를 사용할 줄 아는 지식이 아닌, 언어 지식을 사용하는 능력을 말한다. 상위 언어 능력이 우수한 유아는 다른 사람의 발음을 듣고 식별하는 것, 어휘 의미를 이해하고 사용하며 문장을 정확하고 효과적으로 구성하는 것, 사고력을 동반하는 읽기와 쓰기 과제 등을 효율적으로 처리한다. 다문화가족 유아의 한국어 능력은 일반 가정 유아에 비하여 뒤처질 우려가 크지만 이들의 상위 언어 능력은 다른 양상을 보일 수 있다. 다문화가족 유아의 상위 언어 능력을 살핀다면, 표면적으로 드러나는 다문화가족 유아의 언어 능력 뒤에 숨겨진 이면을 파악할 수 있다. 다문화가족 유아의 언어 능력에 대한 다각적인 접근은 한국어 능력의 부진 여부로 논의하던 지금까지의 이차원적 접근을 벗어나 연구의 기조를 다른 방향으로 이끄는 시발점이 될 수 있을 것이며, 다문화가족 유아의 언어 교육에 큰 시사점을 줄 수 있을 것이다. 본고에서는 사회적 맥락, 특히 가족적 이중 언어 환경과 상위 언어 습득에 초점을 기울인다. 언어 습득을 위한 상호 작용의 선결 조건이 불충분하게 충족된다면 목표어 능력뿐 아니라 상위 언어 능력에도 영향을 미칠 것이므로, 한국적 환경에서 어떠한 조건이 다문화가족 유아의 상위 언어 능력 형성에 영향을 미치는지 그 요인을 발견하고자 하는 것이다. 특히 가족 내에서 ‘역동성이 구현되는 양상’에 초점을 맞추어 이러한 다양한 양상에 따른 다문화가족 유아의 언어 발달 상황을 살펴보고 상위 언어 개념의 도입을 기반으로 다문화가족 유아를 대상으로 한 한국어 교육 정책을 제안하기 위한 첫걸음을 시도하고자 한다. 다문화가족 유아의 상위 언어 능력을 다각적으로 밝히는 것은 표면적으로 드러나는 이들의 언어 능력에 숨겨진 이면을 보는 것으로, 결과에 따라 이들의 언어 교육에 시사하는 바가 클 것으로 예상된다.
Abstract
This paper aims to introduce the concept of meta-language and discuss the ways of applying it to early childhood language education in multi-cultural families. The meaning of meta-language as the meta-cognition is complex in aspect of meta-linguistic knowledge, ability and awareness. This paper mentioned the importance of acquisition of meta-language in social context, especially in bilingual settings, and suggests meta-language ability measurement model in bilingual environment designed to determine the effect of four bilingual settings on meta-language ability and the effect of meta-language ability on Proficiency in Korean and Learning ability. For effective experiment, Ricciardelli(1993)’s Form-Meaning Judgement, Word Renaming and Grammar Judgement Tasks were modified considering the linguistic nature of Korean and, then, used to measure three meta-linguistic domains: phonological, word, and syntactic awareness. To find out meta-language ability of early childhood in multi-cultural families multi-dimensionally indicates the hidden side of their external linguistic competence, and it expects greater implications in language education.
