Abstract
This paper is an attempt of re-examinations of Simone de Beauvoir's feminist thought in the light of evaluations and criticisms by contemporary feminists. Contemporary researchers on Beauvoir's feminist thought have arrived in common at the conclusion that Beauvoir defines female subjects as originally free, but confined in the situation of oppression as man's unequal other, and emphasizes consistently that the potential freedom of female existence is never totally destroyed even in the situations of utmost oppression in which female subjectivity seems nearly almost annihilated. In their 're-reading'of Beauvoir's writings, feminist scholars discover in them vitalizing stimulations and veritable insights for the solution a aporia of feminist thinking of today. Especially, Beauvoir's theoretical explorations in the important areas of defining the gendered subjectivity as the responsible agency of women' liberation, providing the foundations of equality in the community of man and woman, cultivating spiritual culture to support women's freedom and independence, and reforming the education in family and school, and etc. are recognized as the fountainhead of the various new directions of contemporary feminist thought. Rediscovery of the continuing validity and creative insights contained in Beauvoir' thinking and writing make contemporary feminist thinkers of today over the world reconfirm her place as the Great Mother of contemporary Feminism.
