이 논문은 1970년대 후반부터 포스트모더니즘의 영향 하에 부상한 차이 페미니즘의 이론가에 속하는 뤼스 이리가레의 성차 페미니즘을 『반사경』(1974) 에 나타난 프로이트-라캉 정신분석학에 대한 이리가레의 비판적 독해를 통해 살펴 본다. 페미니즘 철학자로서 이리가레의 이론적 발돋움인 『반사경』은, 남성 동일자의 재생산을 위해 여성의 성차(sexuel différence)를 서구 이론의 경제 바깥으로 추방 해온 정신분석학에 대한 비판과 함께 라캉의 개념들을 비판적으로 수용해 여성과 남성 간의 성차를 어머니라는 최초의 타자이자 기원에 대한 서로 다른 비대칭적 관계 맺음으로 보는 관계적 차이로 정의한다. 이 과정에서 이리가레는 여성의 섹슈얼리티를 적극적으로 형상화하고 재개념화하며 여성의 성욕이 상징적으로 거세되어 폐제(forclusion)된 것으로 보는 입장을 거부하며 여성의 상상계를 구축하고자 노력한다. 서구 역사를 통틀어 언제나 거세된 것으로 규정되었던 여성의 섹슈얼리티가 긍정적으로 재개념화되지 않는다면, 성차라는 존중되고 인정되어야 할 근본적인 타자성의 토대 역시 불분명해질 것이기 때문이다. 여성의 성차를 부정성으로 보는 것을 넘어 긍정적으로 이론화하는 이리가레의 이론은 여전히 페미니즘에 유효한 역량을 가져다줄 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
This thesis examines Luce Irigaray, one of the theorists of sexual difference feminism that emerged under the influence of postmodernism from the late 1970s. Specifically, it focuses on Irigaray’s critical interpretation of Freud-Lacan psychoanalysis. In her seminal work Speculum (1974), Irigaray critiques psychoanalysis for excluding women’s sexual differences from the economy of Western theory in order to reproduce male identity. Furthermore, Irigaray embraces Lacan’s concepts and posits that the sexual difference between women and men is an asymmetrical relationship to the origin (mother). In this process, Irigaray actively embodies women’s sexuality, rejects the view that women’s sexuality is symbolically castrated and excluded, and strives to establish women’s imaginary. This is because if female sexuality, which has historically been defined as castrated throughout Western history, is not positively reconceptualized, the basis of sexual difference, which should be respected and acknowledged by both women and men, will become unclear. Irigaray’s theory, which positively theorizes women’s sexual differences, offers effective capabilities to feminism beyond viewing them as negative. By doing so, Irigaray’s work provides a valuable contribution to the feminist discourse on sexual difference.
