Abstract

This study aims to show complicated and multi-faceted layers of marriage between the korean and the japanese in the rule of Japanese imperialism by the love stories of Lee Kwang-su and Han Seul-ya. The marriage between the korean and the japanese is an important fictitious form which can represent colonial contradiction. As it unites distinctive problems like national, ethnic, customary, sexual etc, colonial and ex-colonial imagination of the colonial subject in the romance of the colonial period assume a complicated and contradictory aspect. Such a complication reflects that colonial circumstance is not simple. There are two ways a form as the marriage between the korean and the japanese constitutes the colonized man’s recognition of the colonial state. One is woman’s method(Han Seul-ya’s) and the other is man’s(Lee Kwang-su’s). In Han Seul-ya’s short stories, the colonial man admits his low position as the colonized korean man and spontaneously make his way to internalization and dwarfishness by making love with the colonial japanese woman. Paradoxically this method helps escape from his repressive reality even imaginatively. But Lee Kwang-su goes another way. In his novels, even though the narrator asserts that true love between the colonized man and the colonial woman can be accomplished, it is impossible that their love is realized in the novel. It means that he insists on social and political power of the man ignoring his real low position. Consequently Lee Kwang-su covers up the colonial circumstance and goes to the way of pro-japanese.
