Abstract

Liberalism and Melancholy; Jo, Hyeon-Il This thesis discusses a liberal subjectivity to apear firstly in Gim, Seung-Ok’s novels, and the melancholy which necesarily originated in the liberal subjectivity. It means to examine the main stream of establishing a modern politic subject in 1960’ novels. Gim, Seung-Ok’s novels expresed totally the original elements of liberalism in psychology, ethics and politics. Firstly, though the 419 revolution created the condition of freedom, he negated a public realm, a politic action and expresed the primary liberal politics which made much acount of the private realm at the expense of the public. Secondly his works set forth the esential views of liberal psychology in detail, which consisted of ‘the principle reason and desire’, ‘the principle of arbitrary desire’, and ‘the mobility of desire’. Thirdly, they claimed liberal ethics that was based on the loss of virtue and dominated by the passion of hatred and the pose of asumed evil. All of these qualities made melancholy in his novels. The melancholy was not ‘der ru¨stige Affekt’(sublimity) but ‘der schmelzende Afekt’(beauty), based on moral of compasion, and expresed the melancholy of liberalist who can not do the politic action, ‘praxis’
