Abstract
The Socialistic literary Critics & Joseons Cognition in the 1930s;Koo, Jae-JinThe purpose of this study is to examine the implications of discourse which is shown in the Socialistic Literary Critics in the late 1930’s, regarding the ‘Joseon’. For the purpose, this study focuses on An Ham-Kwang and Im Hwa who reveal the perceptual typology on the Joseon at that time. In the case of An Ham-Kwang, he thought that the features of the Chusun resulted from the economic stage of the Joseon. As a result, he separated socialistic id e o l o g y a n d H i s t o r i c a l M a t e r i a l i s m f r o m r e a l i t y a n d f u r t h e r c ombined universality and individuality mechanicaly. The discourse of An Ham-Kwang resulted in individualism. To Im Hwa who recognized the Asian retardnes, the features of the Joseon was an important concept which made it possible to maintain the orientation toward universality. Im Hwa t r e n d e d t o w a r d u n i v e r s a l i s m i n t o w h i c h t h e f e a t u r e s o f t h e J o s eo n a r e d i s o l v e d . A n Ham-Kwang and Im Hwa are problematic for two reasons. The one reason is that they showed us the complexity of resistance to and compromise with the Japanese fascism which sought to reject the western modernity and to make the orientalworld something particular. The other reason is that their perceptual typology conceived the future direction of national literature and the change of literary groups as overlaping with discourse on ‘tradition’ or discourse on ‘modernism’.
