Abstract

Translation in Korean Literature in 1940s; Yoon, Dae-SukThis treatise tries to inquire the meaning of translation of Korean novel to Japanese in first half of 1940’s. Translation held an important position in the history of Korean modern literature. Translation is important because it paved the way to create new form of Korean literature. But it is more important that we can find out the otherness of Korean literature in translation. In narrow viewpoint, we can define translation as one language to another la n g u a g e . B u t i n w i d e r v i e w p o i n t w e c a n d e f i n e t r a n s l a t i o n a s cultural comunication betwen two diferent language. In this point of view we can regard Korean modern literature as translation. The translation of Korean modern literature changed its aspect from translation from Japanese to Korean, to Korean to Japanese in the first half of 1940’s. Translation in this period was regarded as step to Japanese writing in common view. But this viewpoint is wrong. Japanese writers proposed translation to construct the superiority. But Korean writer proposed it to demonstrate the impossibility of translation into Japanese. Conflict between signifiant was linked to Japanese writing. Japanese writing of Korean writer can be regarded as ‘translation in the head’. ‘Translation in the head’ of the early modern era engraved the otherness into Korean literature. ‘Translation in the head’ of this era engraved the otherness into literature of the imperial Japan. We can cal this as diglosic writing. The translation of Yi Mu-yong’s novel <T h e f i r s t l e s o n , a n d t h e f i r s t c h a p t e r> a n d Y u J i n - o’s novel <Lecturer Kim and profeson T> was trying to engrave the othernes into the literature of imperial Japan through treating of ethnic problem.
