나혜석의 구미 만유기에 나타난 여성 산책자의 시선과 지리적 상상력

Abstract

The previous studies on cultural identity of intellectuals in the colonial period focused on the relationship between Korea and Japan. However, geographical imagination of Korean intellectuals and artists in the colonial period extended to the West as well as many oriental countries. Korean society, culture, politics, and history were not only represented in term of the relationship between Japan and Korea but also in terms of the connection with many other countries. This paper analyzes Na Hye-seok's travelogue in Samcheolee as an exemplary text which reveals the essential role of geographical imagination in the formation as well as development of cultural identity of Koran intellectuals and artists. Na Hye-seok's travelogue in Samcheolee is one of the most important texts in terms of gendered models of modern urban vision. I introduced the idea of flâneuse in order to reveal the relationship between Na Hye-seok's geographical imagination and her cultural identity. She was entering many western cities with very fresh eyes, observing them from within. She did not attempt to give orders to the cities. Instead being laid out statically beneath a panoptic gaze, her cities moved around and with her. Her texts were written from the eye of cosmopolitan flâneuse offering various aspects of western metropolis.
