산책, 응시, 젠더 : 1920～30년대 ‘여성 산책자’(flânerie)의 존재 방식

이 논문은 1920-30년대 경성에서 도시인의 취미로 등장한 ‘산책’ 행위에 주목하고, 소비대중으로서 또는 도시문화의 향유자로서 경성 거리를 오갔던 여성들을 통해 ‘여성산책자’의 존재양식을 탐색하고자 한다. 지금까지 도시 산책자는 자율적 이성을 가진 관찰자이자 미학적 주체로서의 근대적 예술가의 은유이면서 성별적으로 남성을 지칭하는 것이었으며, 도시 거리의 여성들은 남성 산책자의 젠더화된 응시의 대상으로 자리하였다. 하지만, 산책은 사회 역사적 층위에서 이루어진 근대 체험의 한 형식이며, 계급, 인종, 성별 등의 기제가 복합적으로 작동하는 산책자 내부의 다양한 ‘시선’이 문제 제기된다. 이 논문에서는 군중의 일부로서 도시를 배회했던 여성들뿐 아니라, 도시 산책의 체험을 글쓰기 작업을 통해 형상화함으로써 개별적 자기인식을 보여주는 신여성 ‘여성산책자’의 다양한 지형을 탐색한다. 특히, 국경을 넘어 동경과 파리 체험을 했던 나혜석의 예를 통해, 서구 근대의 이상을 적극적으로 내재화하는 과정과 그것으로 인해 조선의 젠더 규범과 충돌하는 지점을 살펴보고, 경성 거리의 여성 혼부라를 문학적으로 형상화한 이선희의 작품을 통해 식민지 당대 중산층 여성의 산책이 당대 젠더기제와 관계 맺는 양상을 살핀다. 이러한 여성산책자를 둘러싼 산책과 젠더, 시선의 관계망은 1920-30년대 식민지 조선이 체험한 ‘코스모폴리타니즘’의 역사적 형식이자, 식민지 도시 경성에 구현된 모더니티의 기표로서 새롭게 성찰될 필요가 있다.
Abstract
This paper pays attention to the wandering in the urban space appeared as a hobby of city dwellers in the 1920-30s' Kyeongseong and explores the way of being in flânerie who was going out for a walk as the consuming public or a subject of enjoying the urban culture. Until now, flâneur in the city has been regarded as an observer with an autonomous reason and a metaphor of modern artist or aesthetic subject whose gender is male and women in the urban streets has been placed as an object of gendered gaze by (male) flâneur. However, wandering is a form of modern experience by city dwellers in a social and historical dimension and diverse 'eyes' in flâneurs which are complicatedly operated by the mechanism of class, race, and gender are questioned. This paper tries to inquire into the geography of flânerie which is composed of the wandering women in the city street as one part of crowd and new women showing individual consciousness through the writings of embodying the experience of urban space. In particular, by the example of Na Hye-seok who visited Tokyo and even Paris in Europe over the national border line, I look into the process she internalized the ideal of western modernity in Paris and the clashing point between her new awakening in Paris and the gender norm in Joseon after she returned home. Furthermore, I examine the correlation between the wandering on urban streets of women from the middle class and gender system in colonial period through the literary work of Lee Seon-hee. The network of a relation among wandering, gender, and perspective surrounding flânerie needs to be reflected as a historical form of 'cosmopolitanism' experienced in colonial Korea and a signifier of modernity embodied in 1920-30s' colonial city, Kyeongseong.
