이호철의 1950년대 소설 연구 -감정과 눈물의 윤리적 의미를 중심으로

본 논문은 이호철의 1950년대 소설의 핵심이 ‘감정과 눈물’의 표현에 있다고 보고 그 구체적 양상과 윤리적 의미를 규명하고 있다. 이호철은 전후의 상황을 휴머니티가 붕괴된 ‘裸像’의 상황으로 간주하고 인간 최후의 지점에 놓여 있는 감정의 탐구를 통해 윤리적 대안을 제시하고자 한다. 그리하여 그의 작품은 시종 눈물과 웃음을 통해 슬픔ㆍ기쁨 등의 기본적 감정은 물론 조롱, 특히 서러움 등의 복합감정을 표현한다. 그리고 무엇보다도 연민, 동감 등의 도덕 감정에 호소하고 그로부터 발생하는 상호동감의 눈물을 표현하는 데 시종한다. 윤리적 행위를 낳지 못한다 할지라도 연민은 최소한 타인을 괴롭히는 행위를 억제한다는 점에서, 동감은 인간 상호간의 감정을 이해할 수 있게 만들어 사회적․윤리적 삶을 가능케 한다는 점에서 그 자체로 윤리적 의미를 갖는다. 그리고 이로부터 발생하는 눈물은 상호동감의 위로를 가능케 하며 인간의 도덕적 능력을 증명한다는 점에서 의미 있다. 이호철 소설의 핵심에 자리 잡고 있는 도덕 감정에의 호소와 눈물은 감상성이라 하여 부정되어서는 안 되고 오히려 전후의 상황에서 고유의 윤리적 대안을 제시하고자 하는 노력의 소산으로 평가해야 할 것이다.
Abstract
The thesis discusses Lee, Ho-Cheol’ works in 1960’, focusing the ethical meaning of emotion and tears. He regarded the postwar days as the situation of a nude figure in that the humanity was destroyed through the Korean War and tried to present ethical foundation, inquiring emotion. Thus, from beginning to end his works expressed the basic emotions such as sadness/joy and the second emotions such as scorn/‘seoreoum’ through laughter and tears. Above all they appealed to moral sentiments such as pity and sympathy and expressed tears of mutual sympathy that arose from moral sentiments. Even if heroes do not act ethically from the moral sentiments, the moral sentiments themselves are very important ethical meaning in that at least the pity suppresses acts of bullies and the sympathy allows ethical and social life by making mutual understanding of human feelings. And tears that arise from the moral sentiments have very important value in that they console the human beings in pain through the mutual sympathy and proves to be a moral human abilities. A appealing to moral sentiments and tears must not be regarded as negative sentimentality but must be appreciated as the ethical foundation that he investigated difficultly in the postwar situation.
