최현식의 서정주라는 문학적 사건(2024)에 대한 서평 논문인 이 글은 영원성과 전통성과 같이 미당의 시에서 반복된 개성적 특징의 재인식과 기억, 사건, 모럴의 탐색을 위한 통합적인 독법의 양식(style)으로서 이 책의 연구성과를 논의한 것이다. 이 책에 실린 13편의 글은 1930년대 초에 쓴 습작기, 신춘문예 당선작 ｢벽｣(1936), 화사집(1941)부터 1980, 90년대 노년기에 쓴 팔할이 바람(1988), ｢늙은 떠돌이의 시｣(1993)까지 반세기에 걸쳐 미당 서정주가 활동한 역사적 시간과 그의 말년의 문학까지 ‘시적 자서전’이라는 형식으로 탐색했다. 따라서 이 책에서 서정주 연구는 시인의 문학사적 공과를 연대순으로 열거하기보다 오히려 동일한 담론과 표상으로서 반복되거나 소거된 부분, 오류와 불일치, 가설과 추론이 가능한 영역을 발견하고 그에 대한 논거를 한데 모아 정리, 분석하는 것에 집중된다. 이는 학술교육장에서 서정주를 친일 문인으로서만 기억되지 않고 다른 성찰을 담론화할 필요가 있다는 저자의 생각이 반영된 부분이다. 따라서 저자는 일제 말기 시단을 재조명하며 서정주의 일본어 시편을 살피는 한편 동양적 보편과 민족적 보편의 상상적(이념적) 자리바꿈이 서정주 변화에 단속적 영향을 미친 부분을 해명하고, 무엇보다 서정주가 평생에 보여준 ‘시인됨의 정체성’에 주목해 그가 문학적으로 구축한 초월성과 영원성 체험의 측면에서 ‘장소’의 진정성을 탐색했다. 또한 70세가 넘어 출간한 시집을 ‘시적 자서전’이라고 통칭하고 말년의 문학성을 시사한 데서 연구사적 의미가 크다. 서정주 문학이 불러일으킨 파장과 영향의 전반을 살핀 이 책을 통해 우리는 어쩌면 불화의 산물로서 서정주를 ‘말년의 시인’으로 다시금 읽어볼 수 있지 않을까.
Abstract
The paper, a book review of A literary event called the Seo, Jeong-joo(2024), discusses the book’s research achievement as a unifying reading style for the exploration of memory, events, and morals, as well as the re-recognition of recurring personal features in Middleton’s poetry, such as eternity and tradition. The thirteen essays in this volume explore the historical period of Seo, Jeong-joo’s activity over half a century, from the poems written in the early 1930s to those written in his later years in the 1980s and 90s, in the form of a “Poetic Biograph” Therefore, rather than chronologically enumerating the poet’s literary history, the study of Seo Jeong-joo in this volume focuses on discovering and analyzing areas of repetition and erasure, errors and inconsistencies, hypotheses and inferences, and arguments for and against the same discourse and representation. The author examines Seo Jeong-joo’s Japanese poetry by revisiting his poetry group at the end of the Japanese colonial period, explains how the imaginative (ideological) repositioning of the oriental universal and the ethnic universal had a discontinuous effect on Seo Jeong-joo’s transformation, and explores the authenticity of ‘place’ in terms of the experience of transcendence and eternity that Seo Jeong-joo constructed literarily by paying attention to the ‘identity of being a poet’ that he showed throughout his life. This book is also of great historical significance in that it suggests the literary quality of Seo Jeong-joo’s later years by collectively referring to the poems he published after the age of 70 as ‘poetic biography’. Through this book, which examines the full range of waves and influences that Seo’s literature has evoked, we can perhaps re-read Seo as a ‘poet in his later years’ as a product of discord.
