Abstract

Historian Hong Jong-wook's "Nation and Revolution: The Ideology and Practice of Colonial Socialism"(Yŏksabip'yŏngsa, 2025) is an academic work that historizes the Ideology and practice of Korean Socialism from the 1930s to after liberation. East Asia was located at the periphery of world history, so it does not have theories and languages to represent itself. The Korean people, however, practiced the socialist revolution, and based on the historical experiences of the non-Western countries, they explored the possibility of constructing a new socialist theory and forming a subject. "Nation and Revolution" reconstructs the historical figure of colonial socialist theory and subject. This article reviewed "Nation and Revolution" focusing on the history of the periphery, the experience of the Popular Front in the 1930s, and the subjectivity of the people. As a result of the review, new topics such as the human declaration from "colony = Asia", the legacy of the nation, and the liberation of surroundings were discovered. The ideology and practice of colonial socialism described by "Nation and Revolution" evoke the practice and dreams of the Korean people who lived in world history in the 20th century, and the task of "writing the history of the nation and revolution". That is why now we read "Nation and Revolution".
